# Importing Your Members

> Add your existing roster to GroupFlow from a CSV file

Most groups arrive with a roster already — a spreadsheet, a club directory, an export from another platform. Bringing it in early is worth doing, because the rest of your setup then has real members to work with: you can see how the directory looks, send your first announcement, and open your first event to people who are already there.

Start by saving your roster as a CSV file. Most spreadsheet programs can save or download a sheet in that format.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the import page">
    In the admin menu, go to **Members & Users** to open **Member & User Accounts**, then press **Import**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check your columns">
    Your file needs a **Name** column, or a **First Name** and a **Last Name** column. **Email** and **Phone** are optional, and every other column is ignored. Press **Download a sample CSV file** if you would rather start from a file with the right headings.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose your file">
    Pick your CSV file with the file field. GroupFlow reads it and shows a **Preview** — nothing has been imported yet.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the preview">
    The preview counts the rows it would add, the rows it would skip, and the rows with a problem, and gives every row its own outcome. If the counts are not what you expected, press **Choose a different file**, fix your file, and choose it again.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Import">
    Press the **Import** button, which names how many members it will add. **Import finished** then reports what happened.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Every member the import adds is active straight away, joined the group today, and has no membership end date. GroupFlow sends them no email, so your members hear nothing until you write to them yourself.

<Note>
  A file can hold up to 500 members, and the import covers names, email addresses and phone numbers. For a larger file, or for membership dates, dues, custom profile fields, or an export from another platform, GroupFlow Support can do the import for you: [support@groupflow.app](mailto:support@groupflow.app).
</Note>

## If some rows were not imported

A row can be skipped, because that address already has an account, or reported as a problem, because something in it needs correcting. Either way you can download those rows, fix them, and import them again. [Importing Members from a CSV File](/guides/members#importing-members-from-a-csv-file) explains what each outcome means and what the import does to an account it already knows.
