# Viewing and Registering for Events

> Find your group's events, register, pay, pick a ticket option, and join a waitlist

Events are the part of your group's website you will come back to most. The **Events** page lists everything coming up, each event has a page of its own with the time, place and cost, and registering happens in a short series of windows that asks only for what that event needs.

What you are asked varies by event, because the organizers decide it: a free event with one ticket option takes two taps, while a paid event with several ticket options, add-ons and questions of its own takes a few more. This page walks the longest version, so skip the parts your event doesn't show.

## Finding an event

Open **Events** from your group's menu, or go to `/events`.

* The **Search…** box narrows the list as you type. If your group tags its events, a **Filters** button sits beside it; press it to pick tags, and the button then shows how many you have chosen.
* **All Events** and **My Events** sit above the list. **My Events** shows only the events you are registered for or hosting, and it appears once you are signed in. A small dot next to it means you have an upcoming one.
* **Past** and **Upcoming** tabs split the list by date. On **My Events**, **Upcoming** carries a count of the events you are registered for.
* **View as calendar** and **View as list** switch between the two layouts. The calendar shows the group's events for one month at a time, each on its day.

When nothing matches, the list says **No events found**.

## What an event's page tells you

The event's own panel — beside the event on a wide screen, above the description on a narrow one — is the one to read before you register:

| What it shows | When you see it |
| - | - |
| The date, and the start and end times | Always |
| The cost, or **FREE** | Always |
| **You are registered** or **You are waitlisted** | Once you have registered |
| How many places are left | On events that cap registration |
| **Add to calendar** | While the event is still in the future |
| How many guests you may bring | When the event allows guests |
| The location | Some events show it only to registered attendees |

A nearly full event shows the number of places left, such as `3 spots left`. When the last one goes and the event keeps a waitlist, that line reads **Event is currently waitlist only** instead.

Two lines mean you can't register at all: **This event is canceled**, and **RSVPs are closed at this time**.

Lower down, **Attendees** lists who is coming — headed **Going** and **Waitlist**, with their counts, once anyone is waitlisted. **See all attendees** opens the full list, split into **Going**, **Maybe Going** and **Waitlist**. Events also carry a discussion thread. Both are shown while your membership is active.

## Registering

Press **Register**. The button reads **Register to Waitlist** when the event is full, and **Update Registration** when you are already registered.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Confirm your email address">
    Only if you are not signed in, and only on an event open to the public. Enter your address under **Please enter your email address** and press **Send the code**, then read the six digits out of the email and enter them under **Enter the code from the email:**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Give your name">
    Only if your account doesn't have one yet. Until you have answered it once, a tick box comes with it: **Email me when there are new events and announcements**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose Going">
    The **Event Registration** window shows your current registration status, then the choices: **Going**, **Not going**, and **Remind me later**. Press **Going**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Answer the event's questions">
    Only on events whose organizers added questions. The window is headed **Questions**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Say how many are coming">
    On an event that counts heads rather than selling tickets, **How many people are attending?** gives you a number with a minus and a plus beside it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose your option">
    Unless the event has a single free option, **Choose your option** lists what is on offer under **Select a pricing option for the event**, with anything extra under **Add-ons** and the running **Total** beneath. Some options have a smallest quantity you must take.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pay">
    The **Payment** window repeats the event and your order, then **Choose your payment option**. See below.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Finish">
    **Registration is complete**, and the window tells you **Your registration is submitted**. Press **Dismiss** to close it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### Paying

If you have a card saved with the group, **Choose your payment option** lists it and uses it. To pay with a different one, press **Add a new payment method** and enter it; **Use an existing payment method** goes back to the saved list.

Some events take the money at the door. Those say **Payment will be collected at the event.** when you finish, and your registration is recorded as an RSVP rather than a paid ticket.

Once the event's registration deadline has passed, you can no longer register — the window says "Registration for this event has closed." If you registered before the deadline and still owe money, the button on the event page reads **Payment** instead of **Register**. It opens the same window, with the steps that are no longer any use to you left out, so you confirm your order and pay.

## Waitlists

When an event is full and its organizers keep a waitlist, registering puts you on it. The window warns you before you commit — **You will be put on the waitlist** — and tells you afterwards:

<Note>
  **You are on the waitlist.** You will be automatically notified by email when you are moved to the 'going' list.
</Note>

The event page then shows **You are waitlisted** where it would otherwise show **You are registered**.

A place frees up when someone drops out. Depending on how the organizers set the event up, GroupFlow either moves the longest-waiting person up on its own, or tells the organizers there is a place to fill. You also move up if a paid attendee hands you their ticket; see [Transferring Your Ticket](/member-docs/transferring-tickets).

## Changing or canceling your registration

Press **Update Registration** on the event page and you are back in the same window, with your answers filled in.

* **Update registration** keeps you going and saves whatever you changed.
* **Not going** cancels. The window confirms **Successfully unregistered**.
* **Remind me later** records that you are interested without taking a place, and sends you a reminder before the event. The **See all attendees** page counts you under **Maybe Going**.

Two things worth knowing before you cancel. Some events don't allow it at all: the window says "This event's policy does not allow unregistering from the event", and points you at the host or, if you have paid, at transferring your ticket instead. And if you have already paid, switching to **Not going** does not refund you — the window tells you to read the event description for that event's refund policy and to contact the host with any questions.

## When you can't register

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| "This event is only available to logged-in members." | Sign in. The event isn't open to the public. |
| "To register, please visit the dues page to renew your membership." | Your membership has lapsed. Renew it on the dues page, then register. |
| "You must register your email address before you can register for the event." | Add an address on your account page first. |

## Events your group runs elsewhere

Groups that run their membership through Meetup register attendees there. Those events show **Register on Meetup** instead of **Register**. When one is open to the public it also offers non-members a **Non-member ticket** link, or tells them to read the event description for how to attend.

Other events sell tickets on a site of their own. Register for one of those as usual, and the last window tells you the job isn't finished — "This event requires registration on an external site." — with **Click here to register on the external site** below it. A visitor who isn't signed in sees **Get Tickets** on the event page instead, which goes to the same place.

## Putting an event in your calendar

**Add to calendar**, under the event's times, opens **Add this event to your calendar:** with a button per calendar — **Google Calendar**, **Outlook Live**, **Office 365** and **Yahoo Calendar**, and for anything else **iCalendar: Outlook, Apple Calendar, etc.** Each one opens your calendar with the event's details already filled in.
