# Updating Your Profile

> Edit your photo, name and answers, and choose which ones other members can see

Your profile is what the rest of the group sees of you: your photo, your name, and your answers to the questions your group asks its members. It is separate from your account settings, which cover how you sign in and how GroupFlow reaches you.

Every group writes its own profile questions, so your profile has fields this page can't name. What is the same everywhere is how you edit them, and how you decide which ones other members can see.

## Opening your profile

Open the user menu on your group's website and choose **Profile**. You can also get there from your **Account** page: press **Edit profile** on the card at the top.

The page is titled **Edit Profile**.

## Editing a field

Each field shows its current answer with a small **edit** link below it. Press **edit** and the field opens in a window of its own, headed with the question. Change your answer and save.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Press edit">
    Find the field you want to change and press **edit** beneath it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Change your answer">
    The window shows just that one question. Fill it in.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Decide who sees it">
    Most fields have a **Visible to other members?** tick box. See below.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Press **Save**. The window closes and the new answer appears on the page.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Only the field you opened is saved, so you can change one answer without touching the rest.

## Who can see each answer

Next to each field's **edit** link is an eye icon. An open eye means the answer is shown to other members; a crossed-out eye means it isn't. Pressing the eye opens the same edit window the **edit** link does — the setting itself is the **Visible to other members?** tick box inside it.

Hiding an answer hides it from other members. Your group's organizers can still see it.

<Note>
  The fields GroupFlow keeps for every member — your name, photo, pronouns, location, introduction and phone number — don't have this control. They are part of how the group identifies and reaches you.
</Note>

## Your photo

Your photo sits at the top of the **Basics** section. Press **edit** under it, then **Select a photo...** and choose a file from your device.

A window then opens with your photo in a square frame and a slider beneath it. Drag the photo to move it and use the slider to zoom, so that the part you want fills the frame. Press **Attach** to keep it, or **Cancel** to pick a different file. Then press **Save** to save the answer.

## The Basics section

**Basics** holds the fields GroupFlow keeps for every member, as well as whichever of your group's questions it has been set up with.

| Field | Can you change it |
| - | - |
| Photo, name, pronouns | Yes |
| **Title** | No — set by your group. Shown while your membership is active. |
| **Joined Date** | No — shown once you are a member |
| **Member Status** | No — see [Creating Your Account](/member-docs/creating-account) |

**Member Status** shows a badge reading `active`, `inactive`, `banned` or `non-member`. For an inactive or banned membership, the date it changed is shown beside it when your group recorded one.

At the foot of **Basics** are two links: **View profile as others see it**, which opens your profile on the member profile page, and **Account settings**, which goes to your account page.

<Warning>
  **View profile as others see it** is not a preview of what you have hidden. Your own answers are always shown to you, whichever way the eye is set, so don't use that page to check whether a field is hidden — check the eye icon on the **Edit Profile** page instead.
</Warning>

**View profile as others see it** appears while your membership is active.

## If your group uses Meetup

Groups that keep their member records in step with Meetup can't let you edit the fields Meetup owns — your name, location, photo and introduction. Those fields show **edit on Meetup** instead of **edit**, which opens your group on Meetup in a new tab. Change them there, and your GroupFlow profile follows.

## The group's own sections

Below **Basics**, your group's profile form appears as one section per heading, with its questions inside. These are shown once you are a member; before that, only **Basics** appears.

For what organizers can see and change, and how the member directory works, see [Members & Profiles](/guides/members).
