# Navigation Menus

> Add, change, reorder, and hide the links in your website's menus

Your website's menus are edited in Edit Mode, like the rest of the site. The main menus are:

* **The public menu** — In the header of your public pages
* **The members menu** — In the header of the members area. It also appears in the menu of the admin area.
* **The footer menu** — In the footer of your public pages

## Opening a menu

1. Turn on [Edit Mode](/website/edit-mode).
2. Click the menu on the page. For example, to edit your public menu, click it in the header of your home page.

The sidebar opens the menu's editor. It has two tabs: **List** shows the links in the menu, and **Attributes** shows the settings of the menu itself.

## Adding a link

1. Open the menu, and press **Add nav item** on the **List** tab.
2. Enter a **Display label**: the text visitors see in the menu.
3. Enter a **Page Path**: where the link goes. Press **Select local page...** to choose a page on your site, or enter a full web address, such as `https://example.com`, to link to another site.
4. Make sure **Make item published** is checked, then save.

New pages aren't added to menus automatically, so add a link whenever you create a page you want people to find.

## Reordering and removing links

* **To reorder links**, drag them on the **List** tab. The new order is saved and goes live right away.
* **To remove a link**, use its delete action on the **List** tab and confirm.
* **To hide a link temporarily** without removing it, open it and uncheck **Make item published**.

<Warning>
  When you delete a page, links to it stay in your menus. Remove them yourself so visitors don't land on a missing page.
</Warning>

## Link settings

Click a link in the **List** tab to edit it.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Display label** | The text shown in the menu |
| **Internal name** | A name to help you identify the link in the editor. Visitors don't see it. |
| **Slug** | Leave this blank. |
| **Page Path** | Where the link goes: a page on your site, such as `/about`, or a full web address |
| **Access by permission role** | Show the link only to members with a particular permission, such as Events |
| **Make item published** | Uncheck to hide the link from everyone |
| **Visible to logged-in members?** | Show the link to people who are logged in |
| **Visible to logged-out members?** | Show the link to visitors who aren't logged in |

Use the two visibility settings to show different links to visitors and members. For example, show a **Join** link only to logged-out visitors, and a **Members Home** link only to logged-in members.

Links to pages in the members area, which start with `/members`, are shown only to members with an active membership, whatever their other settings. Links to pages members need while renewing, such as the dues, account, and profile pages, are exceptions.

<Note>
  These settings control who sees a link in the menu. They don't control who can open the page itself. Whether a page is public or members-only depends on its web address. See [Pages](/website/pages).
